Challenge Your Teen’s Basic Knowledge (part I-home life skills)

Gosh there is a lot for adults to teach teenagers.  To start, there is all the academic concepts in school (glad teachers are taking care of that). Then we have current events, sports info, etiquette, manners, personal hygiene, life skills, employment skills, finance, and people skills (to name a few). And hard as we try, there aren’t enough hours in the day, interest on the part of teens to learn, or adult knowledge of what skills teens today are missing. So, here is some help.

At first glance, you may assume that all teens know how to use basic tools and perform simple tasks related to home repairs. However, I assure you there will be some surprises. Ask the following “home life” tasks to be demonstrated  (not just talked about) to ensure teens that you know can perform and not just spout off what they think needs to happen. But be forewarned, teaching or re-teaching may be needed.

I’m presenting challenges in small chunks (hence the 5 questions or tasks at a time), so it’s a manageable undertaking. You will have fun engaging with teenagers while doing these challenge and have some laughs I’m sure.

Let’s start with 5 skills … challenge your teen to:

  1. use a hammer to pound in a nail …
  2. use a drill …
  3. hang a picture in drywall/plaster using an anchor bolt
  4. hang a picture into a wall stud …
  5. change the filter in the furnace/air conditioning unit

This is the first, in a series of challenges for you to use. Watch for more and share, tweet, pin, etc., so others can benefit.

Make the most of your day!
